”5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. 6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart. 7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, 8 because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free.”
Ephesians 6:5-8
In 1865, Dr. James L. Maxwell founded Sin-Lau Hospital, its purpose is to bring the Gospel of Christ through medical work to then, ill with disease, Taiwan. On account of Dr. Maxwell’s faith and loving heart, and also his brilliant medical skills, he has quickly won the people’s trust and recognition. There was a certain period of time, when medical missionary work was frustrating due to various factors, especially as a result of economic recession and because of the war, personnel changes and others. There were only 1 to 2 physicians left for consultation clinics. But the Good God above still watches over Sin-Lau Clinic.
In 1985, under the dispensation and amazing grace of God, Sin-Lau was rebuilt. Meanwhile, God touched many of the faithful servants of the Lord, in concentric efforts with an extremely difficult medical environment, led Sin-Lau Hospital in expanding to another Regional Teaching Hospital branch in Ma-Dou district and an Out-Patient Clinic at An-Nan district. In addition, last year 2015, on the 150th anniversary, Sin-Lau announced the completion of the James Maxwell Memorial Building and the construction of a model Nursing Home in Ma-Dou district, making the hospital at this day and age, be a good testimony in continuing the services and teachings of Jesus Christ.
In 2008, Sin-Lau Hospital’s Board of Directors under the glorious leadership of God, invited Dr. Huang Tzu-Yuan, M.D. to serve as the third Superintendent. Soon after Dr. Huang took office, (the following year), he was faced with a challenge of a new system of hospital accreditation, although in such a short time, with an innovated and efficient leadership, in concerted efforts, he led all employees to a smooth and successful accreditation of both hospitals, Tainan having an excellent score as a Regional Teaching Hospital, and Ma-Dou branch from District Teaching Hospital upgraded to a Regional capacity.
The hospital’s various software and hardware updates has a grave crisis and effect on business management. In recent years, Dr. Huang and the hospital’s team are diligently planning step by step, from the wards, to the out-patient clinics, and to every departments in renovating and updating, major equipment purchases, building nursing care information, giving the hospital a new look, and allowing the public to have more confidence in us.
In addition to serving our hospital, in 2011, Dr. Huang was elected as the first Director of the Asian Christian Hospital Association (ACHA), actively participating in international church hospital ministries, hosted international conferences, and personally led a delegation to participate in a medical mission to India and to our own rural areas.
In response to Taiwan’s era of aging population, Dr. Huang actively planned a construction of a model nursing home at Ma-Dou district. In 2015, on the 150th anniversary of Sin-Lau Hospital, Maxwell Memorial Building was inaugurated, and from an acute care facility, it was extended to chronic medical care institution, making our services more comprehensive and future-oriented.
With courage to face the challenges, positive intentions in business, active in domestic and foreign medical ministries, leading the hospital’s vision towards the future, this is Dr. Huang’s excellent quality. Thank you for his dedicated effort in reconstruction, writing another brilliant page in the history of Sin-Lau Hospital.
As said in Ephesians 6:5-8 : “Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free”.
