On August 1, 2008, Dr. Huang Tsu-Yuan accepted the Board of Directors’ appointment as the third superintendent of Sin-Lau Hospital. Thanks to Dr. Huang’s high regard, promoting me to the position of Vice-superintendent. And because of this reason, over the years I had the privilege of learning from our superintendent and leading our colleagues and participating in our hospital’s business management.
Sin-Lau Hospital’s progress is obvious under Dr. Huang’s leadership. The hospital staff and patients felt the improvement, whether in terms of medical missionary work, stable development, upgrading the quality of medical care, and updating a variety of hardware and software equipments.
Dr. Huang established a Cancer Friends Joy Choir and different kinds of Art Classes for cancer patients to have a healthy and enjoyable life situation, a medical treatment and care in terms of body, mind, and spirit. Three years ago, the hospital build a model Maxwell Memorial Nursing Home facility at Ma-Dou district to extend the services from an acute to chronic and long-term care. Gradually realizing Dr. Huang’s goal of a long-term care sector as established by the Presbyterian Church, “Suang-Lien in the North and Sin-Lau at the South”.
Dr. Huang’s energy is comparable to the non-stop drumming bunny of the Energizer battery advertisement, he is always in a dynamic state, never shows exhaustion. I often see Dr. Huang, after a full day’s work load, despite being physically tired, will not cancel scheduled meetings, and is still energized to receive reports from section chiefs, eventually making firm and decisive rulings
What impressed me most were the Superintendent’s Meeting and the Staff Meeting, which is often scheduled after working hours, and will go on until or after 11 o’clock in the evening. I remember one meeting still in progress until midnight, one of the vice-superintendent’s wife called up for fear of his safety, the former immediately send a real-time video communication to make her at peace. We can not show weariness as Dr. Huang is still full of energy.
Sports is one of Dr. Huang’s strength, in addition to table tennis, during our medical school days, me and Dr. Huang excelled in track and field sprints. Last November 2015, the hospital held it’s 150th anniversary games, Dr. Huang happily asked me to join him in entering the relay race. I was at first hesitant due to many years of inactivity and previous sports injuries, but due to Dr. Huang’s self-confidence and positivity, I agreed to join. Surely enough, in the course of practice and preparing for the games, I withdrew from the race due to a calf muscle strain injury. On the day of the games, Dr. Huang, contrastingly looking older than me, took on the Surgical team’s last leg of the relay, and amid the stronger adversaries, he valiantly finished the final sprint. This kind of strength, sportsmanship, and endurance are most admirable.
God led Dr. Huang to Sin-Lau Hospital. These past 8 years, he demonstrated a forward-looking vision, decisive leadership, strong will power, and great mobility, leading all employees in striving to accomplish a medical-evangelical mission. To become a “Cure a Disease, Cure a Person, Cure a Nation” Christian Hospital. I believe God will commemorate Dr. Huang’s hard work and contribution.
